jonathan: u.s.he december cpi report due out less than one hour. gregory peters writing, "odds favor stable to lower yields ahead which bodes well for fixed income returns, whether they come from carrie or from total return. -- carry or total return." let's talk about this backup and bond yields. what is driving it? a lot of it is about supply. do you think it is? greg: there are a multitude of factors. it is part growth. it is mostly been real yields. that is a growth change, which i don't quite fully comprehend. some of it is productivity through ai and other means. other is supply with the deficit. some of it is the policy uncertainty and factoring in more inflation. it is a combination of those things. what is driving the move ultimately is the change in the fed. if you look at the pricing and probability of rate cuts and rate hikes, it is completely flat. if you go back to september, the probability of a rate cut -- sorry a rate hike was virtually zero. now it's all most when he 5%. the fact th

jonathan: u.s.boosting bets that the fed will cut sooner than anticipated. retail sales data drops to 8:30, and francis mcdonald -- frances donald disagreeing, same rbc economics is no longer calling for anymore rate cuts and the reason is the data want to give the fed enough justification for further easing. did cpi change the story at all yesterday for you? frances: no. inflation will move downwards but not below the fed target and more problematically, what is the balance of risk in the later part of the year? everything i heard about, this cpi was marginally below consensus, it is a game changer. first of all, the data was not a massive in changer in and of itself, but if you looked at a more economic cycle, that would be one thing, and we say the economy is behaving mid-cycle, we know that there are these shocks that are going to disrupt the cycle that we are currently in but we don't know the probability or the size, but we know that they are coming, so where we are in december, january or feb

jonathan: make it simple.version distorted the move in fixed income that we otherwise would have seen? there's an argument for higher bond yields off the back of the data? greg: exactly. the credit markets were unaffected. it was literally a nonevent. all the movement was in the treasury market. if you take the data on bounce, that suggests higher, not lower bond yields. it was a risk aversion trade that won the day. jonathan: greg, thank you. interesting final point on the bond market. lisa: if you look at the data you would had a selloff with yields higher and the risk aversion around the potential selloff of nvidia he sees as being misguided. essentially greater efficiency will lead to greater productivity which will lead to faster growth which potentially could send yields higher. jonathan: good news for chairman powell. lisa: no forecast. they don't have to say anything. i wonder if they will give a hint about maybe they could raise rates at some point again. if that is the case, that would be a big shock

jonathan: you mentioned 2017.o you believe we are going into something that looks like 2017 or something that looks like 2018 or something very different? >> i think it is a combination, some rhyming and echoing going on. we didn't even know what the tax rate was going to be for corporations and we managed to price that in ahead of time anyway. if you look back at the big move we had over the summer when the market started to sniff out the trump victory into november highs, i think markets were kind of baking and a lot of the good stuff and maybe a lot of the challenging stuff still needs be filtered in. and then trump version one was kind of the good stuff in a 2017 and the challenging stuff in a 2018. but there was sequencing and maybe we are just not going to do that same sequencing in the market can have a better picture of have it all fits together, and then we can move on to whatever is next. there is some rhyming but i do think the timeline is a bit different. lisa: my head is kind of spinning, it always is
